Matthew C. Barthalow is an experienced patent attorney who has dedicated his career to assisting clients with obtaining valuable patent rights for their inventions as well as guiding clients through challenges posed by their competitors’ patents. Mr. Barthalow has helped clients to build strong worldwide patent portfolios, launch innovative products, and close important business deals. He has also provided his expertise to negotiate favorable patent licenses and support clients faced with the prospect of litigation.

Mr. Barthalow has extensive experience across diverse technologies with a particular focus on biotechnology, pharmaceutical, chemical, and medical-device patent matters. In that respect, he regularly assists clients by drafting and prosecuting patent applications, preparing noninfringement/invalidity opinions including freedom-to-operate analyses for product launches, and performing due diligence analyses on patent portfolios for contemplated business transactions. For example, his practice involves patenting or otherwise counseling clients on biopharmaceuticals/pharmaceuticals (e.g., therapeutic antibodies, vaccines, small-molecule drugs, etc.), gene-editing techniques (e.g., CRISPR applications, gene therapies, genetically engineered microorganisms, etc.), in vitro diagnostics (biomarker assays for diseases, bacterial contamination/infection assays, plant genomic assays, etc.), and various types of medical devices.

Throughout his career, Mr. Barthalow has led attorney teams for particular clients and mentored new patent attorneys. He has also been invited to provide presentations on various aspects of U.S. patent law and practice, including while traveling in France, Japan, and India. Before joining MH2 Technology Law Group, LLP, Mr. Barthalow started his legal career at Maier & Maier, PLLC, then spent over fifteen years at Oliff PLC, and most recently enjoyed a brief stint at Williams Mullen to work with another former member of Oliff PLC on specific matters.

Matt earned his Juris Doctor degree and his Master of Intellectual Property degree, magna cum laude, from the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, and his Master of Science degree and his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. During law school, he was an extern at the Office of the Solicitor at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he worked on projects related to both legal policy and appellate advocacy. Before law school, he performed scientific research during graduate school and at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as an undergraduate.
